This is an unfortunate trap.
We get stuck in those feelings of helplessness, confusion, and overwhelm, which cause us to struggle through our lives. Only forgetting the seemingly endless whole in our heart when distracted by an interesting stimulus for awhile. So, we spend more time distracting ourselves to avoid the pain of being where we are now only to find ourselves deeper down in the dumps when the time wasted becomes more and more evident.
There comes a time when the feelings of confusion become unbearable.
This is when you have two choices.
1) Sink deeper into confusion, which can lead to sadness, anxiety or depression.
2) Start from where you are now.
I like option #2 WAY more. It`s really the only viable option in my mind! Start where you are right now. What a freeing concept. Most of us think we need to have it all figured out. We need to know exactly where we are going and the exact steps that are required to get there. This is almost never the case - not when it comes to career, life purpose, romance, spirituality, self-image, etc. You DON'T have to have it all figured out. You just need to know what the next step is. Focus solely on the next step right in front of you. This is a harder task for those of us that are big picture people, but you CAN do it. For those of you going "well, I don't even know what the next step is!" Don't you worry, read on.
For example, if you wake up feeling sad everyday because you hate your career, the people at work are mean, changing industries is just too onerous, and all of this has really got you down...there is hope. Avoid letting these circumstances get you so down that you become stuck. Do what you can right now. That means taking small steps. Spend a few minutes in the morning to write down all your sad/upset thoughts so you can get them out of your mind and on paper. At the end of your journal, write a simple positive intention for the day like "life supports me and I can't wait to stop and notice all the good things that happen to me today." Be sure to notice all the good things in your day once you set this intention. Then, make whatever changes you can to make your day more bearable. Dress in clothes that make you feel good. Make your work space a more comforting place by adding pictures, plants, or items that make you feel good. Make plans to start exploring other hobbies and potential careers. Talk to people who you admire and ask them for insight and advice. Take a weekend course in something you've always been interested in. You never know, this could inspire you to change your life direction for the best or you may meet someone that might prove to be an amazing resource. These are all small steps that you can take to get closer to where you want to be. The same strategy applies to any area of your life. Bring the more that you want into your life. Decide that better options are available and you will start to notice the opportunities in your life.
Start from where you are right now. Your vision may be specific and you're not quite sure how to get there or your vision might be something broad like "I just want to be happy". It's okay. You are where you are. The point is to move forward. Start exploring the things that might bring happiness or joy. Go out on a limb and do something wild like rock climbing, a painting class, or a vacation by yourself to just think and decompress. There are tons of events and activities going on in every city, just start getting involved and exploring yourself once again. Be child like in your adventure by bringing playfulness and exploration into your life.
Don't let yourself get stuck in a rut. We are creative beings who are meant to sore! There is always something that you can do right now to get you once step closer to feeling better. Just think about it, take a small risk and go outside of your uncomfortable comfort zone, what you find may change your life in fabulous way!
